Endnotes/100's of pages added/footnotes not showing

In my friend's dissertation file that she has been saving
as an RTF using both Word 97 and Word 2000, she had
endnotes, and using the endnotes suddenly added like 1000
pages to her file. So, she converted the endnotes to
footnotes hoping that would cure the problem. It made
the hundreds of pages go away, but: 1) after footnote #5,
the footnotes no longer show up no the page (but you can
see them if you do Show Footnote); and 2) Footnote #6 is
very large and isn't seeming to automatically feed over
to the next page, so it's causing a break so that there
is only 1 sentence on page 13.

For the heck of it I tried deleting about 2/3 of footnote
#6 and it did then remove the weird break on that page.
So it may have something to do with how large that
footnote is and how it's not continuing on to the next
page.

Has anyone experienced either problem and been able to
rectify it? Thanks in advance for any insights. I'm
stumped. - Jen
