I also have a problem - cannot send or receive e-mail in Windows Mail - so
far I have received tons of advice in this discussion group and from Comcast
and from various HELP sources. NOTHING fixes the problem. I have set the
correct settings at least a dozen times the last two days - the following is
the most recent error message ----------

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject
'e-mail problem 4/2/08', Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server:
'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.1.0
Authentication required', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 550,
Error Number: 0x800CCC78

I have also received error #s 0x800CCCOF and 0x800CCC0D

Just changing the port number is not enough. Did you also do the other
part of the instructions at:

<http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=EmailOutlook18914&cookieattempt=1>

If you did, you may have accumulated some bad settings for something
Comcast didn't mention because the default setting is the right one.
In this case, you should remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail, add the account using the instructions
below except doing them under Windows Mail instead of Outlook
Express, then use the above instructions for changing the port number
to 587.

<http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=Emailtop17686&cookieattempt=1>

Avoid the One Click Fix.

I'm having a similar problem, it seems. I went to the help site and
downloaded the "stuck in the outbox" fix-it, but it didn't fix my problem. I
get the following error message just the same: This is a new computer, but I
have not had problems with the email before. Perhaps it is a Comcast problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. gaily.

'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

There are two problems with your settings:

1. Like the error message says, port 587 requires authentication:
Tools, Accounts, select the Comcast account, Properties, Servers,
enable the "My server requires authentication" option.

2. SSL is never used with port 587, so unselect the SSL option
(under the Advanced tab).
