Windows Mail Can't Send ANYTHING...

Suddenly yesterday morning my email would no longer send, i can receive just
fine, but i cannot send. I don't get any specific error message most of the
time, usually it just times out and says my server hasn't responded in 60
seconds and asks me to wait or stop. If i keep hitting wait i don't get
anywhere, and if i click stop i get a random error message, its never the
same. The one i usually get is just an error occured, or sometimes i get
error 450 too many connections to server.

I have checked with my ISP numerous times, everything is set correctly, i
had AVG antivirus (this is all i have had installed since a clean
installation of Vista, Norton and McAfee have never been on this system
period) and i disabled the email scanning and even uninstalled AVG to try
that, disabled the firewall, disabled the windows defender, followed every
post i could find on the subject, google searched for a whole day, deleted
all email accounts, re-created them all. Created a new User account on the
computer and then put in one of my email accounts and tried again, nope
didn't work. Used system restore and rolled back a month, that didn't help.

I downloaded the WMutil program, it would just delete stuff from the outbox,
what good is that? I can delete them from the outbox myself, they aren't
stuck in there they just won't send out. But anyway, i used the WMutil
program to delete everything from the outbox then i tried to send an email
again after rebooting for the heck of it, still can't send. The send/receive
comes up and the progress bar moves about a quarter of an inch and then sits
there until the server timeout message comes up.

Anyone else have an idea????

Thanks for that detailed trouble report.
You have already done everything I would have advised you to try.
The only thing left is to try is a different email program, in order to
ascertain whether WM is at fault. I suggest you download and install
either WLM or Thunderbird, if only for testing purposes.

I installed Thunderbird and i am able to send and receive just fine, but it
just annoys the heck out of me because its not what i am used to. I also
have Vista on my desktop and have been using Windows Mail on there since day
one. I sure wish there was a way to still have Outlook Express on Vista.

Since another email program can send that means WM is at fault. Anyway to
fix it? I'm stumped, and after a couple days worth of phone calls and
reading on the web nobody else seems to know how to help. I found at least
two dozen other posts on the web similar to mine and they all ended with "use
something else" but thats not the point now is it? It "was working" so why
did it stop. And if it can't be fixed then i want it off my computer and
Outlook Express. These other freebie email apps bug the crap out of me, its
like having Linux, where is the settings, how do i change this, how do i do
that, etc..

Thanks!

I had the same problem. This morning couldn't send nothing. no error
messages..nothing. My desktop which has XP is just fine. What's going on?

Wish i knew.. My desktop running Vista works just fine, the laptop worked
for a week or two and then suddenly quit sending email. I have even tried
connecting to my router and cable modem with a network cable instead of being
wireless to the router. But that shouldn't have been the problem anyway
since Thunderbird can send and receive just fine.

I ran the Wmutl program and it cleared the stuck Outbox messages plus able to
send messages at least for now.

I wish it was that simple here! I ran the WMutil and it didn't do anything
for me. The outbox is empty, i can delete them myself if need be, so they
don't get stuck. When i run the WMutil it says zero stuck messages in the
outbox.

Stuck on Thunderbird for now to be able to use email on my laptop.

Anyone else having the same problem as me?

There is no doubt that something in your WM is corrupted.
Unfortunately, I know of no easy way to refresh WM's system files.
As I see it, you have three other options (besides continuing with
Thunderbird):
1. Delete the entire WM data store, after first saving a copy of it.
The danger is that if you have important saved messages, it could
corrupt those when it re-imports from the saved store. Also, this
may not fix the problem if the basic fault is in a system file rather
than a data file.
2. Try upgrading WM to the WLM beta. You may decide you don't
like it, but you can always go back to WM.
3. Reinstall Vista: I have read in other forums that if you reinstall Vista
over itself, it will renew all the system files but will leave data files
and third party programs intact. Never having done this, I can't
vouch for this method.

If you have done any reading in this forum, you would know that
there are two things to check first for this problem.
1. Are you running a non-compatible antivirus such as McAfee or Norton?
2. How do you know it is not sending? Are the sending attempts piling up
in the Outbox? Can you move or delete messages from the Outbox?

As i already mentioned this was a clean install of Vista Home Premium and
installed AVG antivirus, Norton and McAfee have never been on this system as
i hate both of them anyway.

The reason i know its not sending is it doesn't send.. Let me explain since
that sounds stupid. Say i send an email, while its sending i click on the
send/receive to see the progress window, the progress bar moves about a
quarter of an inch and then stops and doesn't go any farther. Eventually it
says the server hasn't responded in 60 seconds, so i click wait and give it
another go, same thing happens, then i click stop. Sometimes it gives an
error message, and sometimes it just says "an error occured while sending".
Yes, the message is still sitting in the outbox, but i can click on it and
delete it without any problem.

If i run WMUtil it says Zero stuck messages are removed, duh, i just deleted
it myself.

That message of mine you just responded to was actually addressed
to a poster named "jab". You and "jab" have different issues.
It can get really confusing when different individuals hijack a thread
started by someone else.

Now im really upset. I fired up my laptop tonight to check my email quick
before bed and as always Windows Mail can't send anything so i ran
Thunderbird and tried to send a reply to an important email, guess what, same
problem.

Now Thunderbird craps out while trying to send, it times out and says there
is Too Many Connections to the server. I disabled and uninstalled my
antivirus, spy sweeper, disabled the firewall, disabled windows defender, etc
etc etc etc etc...

After about an hour of trying to get Thunderbird to send out email i gave up
and uninstalled it and went to my ISP's web based email to get a reply sent
out before coming here and going to bed.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM???????

I searched the forums tonight, there is TONS of posts with the same problem
as me, timeouts, Too Many Connections error messages, and every one of them
has the same replies, norton, mcafee, etc etc. I don't have either, never
did, and the WMUtil does nothing for my computer.

My desktop which is running Vista still works just fine thankfully, knock on
wood, but this laptop is going to go back to XP this weekend if i can't get
my email working, whats the point of having it if i can't do the most basic
thing i use it for!

See if this helps:

1. Go to the Vista start menu and type cmd
2. The search results will display a program titled cmd
3. Right-click on the link and select "Run as administrator"
4. type "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" without
the quotatioin marks
5. Test your POP account and see if you can now download your mail.
6. If nothing changes, reenable the autotuning feature by typing
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal"

I've seen this info on the forums, but i can't get it to work. If i click
start and type cmd into the search box and hit enter it just brings up the
command window, it doesn't bring up a list of results to click on and select
run as administrator.

Anyone know why it does that?

If i try to type those commands into it, despite my account being an
administrative account, i get a cryptic message about not being able to run
it.

I have almost exactly the same situation you have. For the past three
days I have not been able to send messages using Vista Mail. I can
receive messages, but even though the messages I compose and send show
as "sent" in my "sent" folder, they in fact do not seem to be sent at
all.

A strange twist is that I am able to "forward" messages that have
large (i.e. 250kb to 1457kb) attachments. I can also "send" messages
with large attachments, and they are all received at the email
addresses I send them to.

However, just a message with simple text in it (i.e. 10kb) will not
"arrive" at its destination.

This just doesn't make any sense to me. Any ideas on this strange
situation?

BTW, I am sending _this_ message using Thunderbird, not Vista Mail.
I have AVG on my computer also.

I downloaded Thunderbird mail program this morning and can send from
that, so it isn't my ISP that is the problem. Nor have I made any
changes in my Vista Mail program. It just seems to have "broken".

Has anyone else on the list encountered this problem, and if so, how
did you resolve it?

I don't have a solution for you, but it is extremely unlikely for a
message to wind up in the Sent Items folder, yet not actually get sent.
Our understanding is that a message is not transferred to the
Sent Items folder until the mail program gets a confirmation
from the server that the message has been accepted for delivery.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my query. The strange
thing is that I can send a message using Thunderbird and it is
received. I then send the same message using WM and, although a copy
ends up in my "sent" folder, the message is not received. As I said
earlier, I _can_ forward messages with attachments using WM and they
are received also. However, if I forward a simple text message it is
not recieved.

I don't get any error messages and the email are not stuck in my "out
box" either.

Go to Start | Programs | Accessories and right click (not left click) the
cmd prompt shortcut and then choose Run as Administrator.
