suddenly can't send email

After months of continuous operation, Windows Mail all of a sudden decided it
no longer wants to send emails out. No error messages, the emails just remain
in the Outbox.

Things I've tried (none of which worked):
- change SMTP server
- turn off AV and Firewall
- delete old messages and send new ones
- compact folders and did everything else using this:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/Default.aspx
- installed WGAPlugin fix for Windows Mail

I can still receive emails fine and everything else is working. bizarre

any ideas?

Can you move the oldest messages in the Outbox to the Drafts
folder or delete them, then restart Windows Mail? If this does
not work, download and install this fix with Windows Mail not
running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common
antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee,
tend to cause such problems, although seldom immediately, so if you
have such a program, remember where to find the fix - you are likely
to need it again. A recent antivirus program from Trend also causes
assorted problems in Windows Mail.

If this does not help, what if any antivirus programs do you have?

I moved the messages to the Drafts folder - they all moved by the way. After
restarting the program I send the Draft emails one by one. all of them
worked. Now everything is working again. I won't pretend to understand why
this worked, but it did. thanks

Looks like you may need this fix to make the messages go out faster:
Click on Tools, then Options, then Send. If there is no check mark in
the box before Send messages immediately, click on this box and then
Apply. Click on OK.

I have a new problem now - I installed the fix and deleted the old "stuck"
emails from my Outbox. New emails still go to the Outbox and get hung up when
I try to send them. These always were sent straight away and were never
directed to the Outbox. HELP!! please

Do you get any error message? If so, post it here verbatim.

Which antivirus are you running?

I have the same problem and it's not resolved. I can receive but not send. I
moved the unsent items from Outbox to Drafts.

Here is the error msg I'm getting:
The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'lists', Account:
'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Advice appreciated!

Does your connection to that server cross over from one internet
provider's equipment to another's before it gets to the server? If
so, such connections to port 25 are often blocked to cause problems
for spammers. You may need to check with your email provider
to see if their outgoing email server listens for outgoing mail on any
other port, and if so, the details of switching to the other port. Just
trying all the ports is a very slow way to find out - there are about
65,000 ports available.

Also, it sometimes helps to click on Tools, then Options, then Send.
If there if no check mark in the box before Send messages immediately,
click on this box, then Apply. Click on OK.

If this doesn't help, what if any antivirus programs do you have and
who is your email provider?

The new outgoing mails always went to the Outbox before, but may
have gone on to the outgoing email server fast enough you didn't
notice.

Who's your email provider? You may need to update your email
account settings under Windows Mail, or just remove your email
account under Windows Mail and then create it again.
