Have contacted ntl - there is no fault with them.
Installed their software again - no change.
Outlook Express keeps launching and asking me to log on.
This despite having unchecked the tab 'check for messages every ...'
Any further help would be appreciated.

Bill

Why do you need any ntl software?

It has been my experience that any software from any ISP is crap.

You have configured OE, yes?

Username. password for the email account?

sometimes it seems to take a day to settle in.

BTW: their anti-virus option looks quite good and I understand will soon
encompass firewall & anti-malware too

Some users feel like they are going through a back door into their ISP
unless the whole caboodle is installed.. and of course, the jokers doing NTL
support will always ensure that you follow the NTL flowchart advice to the
letter (or box) until finally one reaches the end where it says "Tell the
customer that Microsoft is to blame, and that the customer should re-install
Windows, calling back after the dust has settled."

As a ps (about ntl)

Make sure you read the EULA carefully. If it makes reference to an
optional monitoring package (let's not call it spyware at the moment) be
sure to remove the offending object

Here are a few maintenance tips for OE, that could be of help:

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Microsoft is alwyas to blame, Mike.

I wonder why the support jokers have a flowchart. All they need is one
sentence. :-D

Been reading PA Bear's posts?

Not on a regular basis, no. But since PA Bear is one of the most
knowledgable people on the OE group, I borrowed a little from him, although
I should indeed have mentioned it. I don't usually like posting links to
Google Groups messages. ;-)
