Email sending limits

I can only send to about 50 emails addresses in any one message. I want to
send up to 500. My ISP says it is a setting within outlook. How do I change
it to send all my emails at the one click of my button?

most sip's limit the number of people a message is sent to and outlook has a
limit to the number of characters you can put in the address fields - I
think it's 256 characters.

What do you mean 256 characters in the address field? I am using Outlook
2000. I used to be able to send a couple of hundred emails at a time when
using outlook express but now about 50. My isp says their limit is over 500.

paste the addresses in notepad and check the line counts... (word's
character count works too).

Outlook is not related to outlook express - so it's not surprising they have
different limits.

Is it possible to tweak the number Outlook accepts or am I just going to have
to go back to outlook express? It is a pain in the bum to have to break up
all my addresses in groups of 40-50. I know some other email programs do it
automatically for you...is this possible in outlook? Thanks for you help so
far....much appreciated.

Nope... there isn't a way to increase it in outlook. Do you need them sent
as one message? If not use mail merge (better than using BCC especially).

Does it also fail if you create a DL with all the names in it (I think it
should fail, unless it Exchange server and a DL in the GAL, but it's worth
confirming.).

Hey Front Man, have you found a solution to your problem? I have the same
problem and I see there are others as well.

The limit is on the mail server, not Outlook.
I am using Outlook2000. I am unable to find the limit of recipients I can
send. Is it 100 or 500? Where can I check on Outlook to verify that number.
Thanks so much..

Usually the limit is imposed by the mail server not the client (Outlook)

True, the number of recipients is determined by the Exchange server; however,
I would like to know the maximum number of recipients on the To: line or the
maximum number of recipients I can have in a distribution list??

Thanks!

The maximum for each depends on how many characters are in the string, not
how many recipients or addresses it contains. DLs are limited to about 120
members, but depending on the lengths of the names and addresses, it can be
more or fewer. I don't know the limit to the string size of the recipient
fields, but I suspect it's fairly high. Why do you ask? Are you
experiencing problems?

Yes, now that the company is using email and contract employees for a lot of
communications, we frequently get asked (like yesterday), "how many..." We
have a list of 4,000 names we want to send this too, etc. They frequently
send out emails and then some get bumped and it becomes a hassle. The lists
are exported from Peoplesoft, so the list is "new" everything they want to
communicate. We'd like to say, don't sent to more than XXX at a time.

Thanks!

You can have a server-side DL that can include all of the people in the
company. We have thousands of employees as well, and certain people in the
company are allowed to send messages to everyone. We also have smaller
lists that are subsets of all employees, so that related groups of people
can be notified with broadcast messages.

Yes, and we have those lists of "all," etc., but as I said, these lists are
usually generated from Peoplesoft and end up in Excel or Word, and it's hard
(impossible) to simply paste names into a distribution list. The lists vary
in length since they may generate something like "all folks with insurance
that includes spouse, children, no life insurance, etc., etc."

I meant that you can create them in the GAL.

Although it's a bit late (relating to the original post), for future searches
by others:

I have found that the limit for Outlook 2003 is 5000 addresses. This is for
all addresses in to, cc and bcc, and includes all the adresses in DLs. This
limit is cliënt-based.

Also, I read (somewhere) that you can expect problems with copy/paste
adresses as soon as the amount of data exceeds the 32 Kb-limit.

The limit is set by your ISP. Foe example, Comcast limits personal accounts
to 100 addresses in a single e-mail.
