I am using Windows XP and have Adobe Reader 9.

The message attachment comes in to us with winmail.dat but the attachment
was sent to us using PDF producer Acrobat Distiller 6.0 (windows)
PDF version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x)
Sender is using windows word 2007 and I am using windows word 2003.

why does it do this?
we need to be able to open these attachments.
Any ideas?

Has nothing to do with Windows XP... Unsure how/why you made that
connection and posted here.

Anyway...
Here's what you need to know.
(I doubt it was sent to you using PDF Producer - more than likely sent using
Outlook...?)

You don't mention what email is being used to send.
Read this ancient response:

If you mean a Winmail.dat then tell the person who is sending you
these with Outlook to uncheck the box :"Always send messages in
Microsoft Exchange rich text format."

I delete all winmail.dat files and ask the Outlook sender to change
from Rich Text to Plain Text.
I opened a few and found nothing of use inside.
This will open them if there is anything of use inside.

It means the sender is using RTF format via Outlook to send mail, and you
are using probably Outlook Express or some other client that does not
support RTF. The sender will have to use plain text or html format in order
for you to properly receive the attachments.

Note: This is not a Windows XP issue, but an issue with email, and future
questions should be asked in the appropriate email client newsgroup.

This is an Outlook specific RTF/TNEF issue - best to ask the experts in an
Outlook newsgroup.

One reason may be the Sender needs to reset the Contact info they have
for you. Their Outlook got confused and embeded the PDF into a dat file.
