email attachments and max pst file size

M

Matt Reid

Hello, i have an issue with a client who uses Outlook 2003.

They send attachments to their clients, and in the last three months, any
time they send an attachment, the receipient receives 10-85 copies of the
same email and attachement. In troubleshooting i found that the emails are
not being cleared out of the OUTBOX upon sending. This is an intermittent
problem. but it happens most of the time lately.

Is there a file size limit to the pst file? I have found that Outlook
Express will do the same thing if the Sent Items dbx file is over 2 gig.

Any help is welcome.

Yes there is and the limits depend on the flavor of PST file used.

Outlook 97/2002 Personal Folders
2GB max file size (Hard limit that can't be changed)
A tad over 65,000 items per folder

Office Outlook Personal Folders
20GB file size (Soft limit that can be increased by a reg key)
Unknown item/folder count limit

FWIW, if POP3/IMAP/SMTP account(s), turn on diagnostic logging and see if
Outlook is able to complete the transaction. My guess is if a client is
doing multiple sends of an item, it means that something is breaking the
communications or the SMTP server isn't letting Outlook close out the
transaction correctly where it doesn't think the send finished. (Same
applies to receiving messages.)

hello neo, after i enable the logging, where does it keep the log file? So
i can look at it.

Sorry, Neo, also, i'm posting the log file. I'm not sure what i'm looking
at so if you can indicate where there may be a problem.
Also, do you know of any information on the explanation of the log file?
For my reference?

thanks.

The mail keeps getting sent because the SMTP server never sends an
acknowldegement that it received the mail, even thought it apparently did.
Instead, you get the error named in the last line above, which is a timeout.
Outlook gave up waiting for the server to acknowledge the message. I see
that you're using a proxied server. Do you have PGP installed on your PC?
If so, what happens if you disable it temporarily?

Neo,
I have a similar problem. I have a 97-2002 pst file that somehow grew to a
little over 2GB. The last email received had an attachment that I think
pushed the file over the edge. I tried to create a new file to drag/drop
some of the files from the >2GB file into, but the >2GB file, being that it
is >2GB won't let me (my theory anyways).
I've upgraded to Office 2003 Small Business at his point. But now an error
pops up that tells me the old file is >2GB and that I need to shift+Del some
stuff to reduce the file size. I can't get the thing open, how can I delete
anything from it?!?
Before I upgraded to 2003, I could at least open the file to a point where I
could see everything in the file. I tried to delete things but Outlook would
just freeze up.
I tried to import the old file into a new 2003 file but the same "file's too
big" error appeared.
Is there any way to open the old >2GB file just long enough to delete a few
attachments in order to get the size down to <2GB?. The actual size is
2.097GB.

Thanks for jumping in and dissecting the log for this person. :)

Thanks Neo, Yes we are using PGP. I'm going to have the client disable PGP
and see what happens.

On another note, do you have a lot of experience with PGP? We had no help
from PGP techsupport.

I've used PGP on occasion, but never with a mail proxy involved. If I want
to encrypt somethings, I do so manually before I send it, not by using an
automatic process that does it.

Thanks for the assistance, but i thought i'd let you know what may be
causing the problem.

PGP IS JUNK!!!

I have PGP installed and one of my computers seems to be operating ok right
now. The other computer is not functioning when PGP is installed and
running. The problem comes down to the Proxy server of the PGP program.

The really big problem is Version 9.x of the new PGP software seems to be
infested with bugs. All of the forums pertaining to PGP, users are
complaining that the new version is junk and the techsupport has gone down
the drain. (they must be trying to fix the problems)

Thanks again.

Brian, do you know of any other Encryption software that WORKS!?

It's not a matter of the software not working, I suspect, but of how it is
configured.

At any rate, you can get a digital certificate from cacert.org or thawte.com
and if your correspondent has one as well, you can exchange encrypted
messages without having anything extra. Outlook knows how to use digital
certificates.

Matt,
We found that if we increased the send/receive increment the size issue
resolved.

Are you talking about the server timeout? I'm not familiar with the
send/receive increment .
