Easier way to apply secure patches if you have dial up?

I need to replace a drive and reinstall a new copy of Windowx XP Home on a
friend's computer.
The friend only has dial-up access. I can activate via XP via dial-up, but
I really do not have time to wait for 40 MB's of security patches to
download from Microsoft. Is there a way I can get all the patches in bulk
from a faster connection and transfer via CD? Is there an ftp site that will
list all of the patches and I can pick and choose the updates?

This computer is a generic home computer, so I do not need server patches or
such.

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

Hello Vinnie . Yes , what you want is possible but absolutely NOT
recommended and inacurate. You can visit Microsoft's Download Center and
start downloading all the patches you need . BUT the question is what patches
exactly do you need?
You can never know because it depends on what version of Windows this is ,
then was it published , what Service Pack it uses , and also most of the
current patches automatically include the old one and these are some of the
reasons which you cannot do it . When a computer visit Windows Update , it
automatically checks everything and it knows *exactly* what your PC needs . I
would recommend this user start using faster internet in near future and
about the installation , install Windows on it , prepare it and take it to an
internet cafe or a professional store and ask for help and you make it or
leave them install the updates on fast internet connection because there is
no other way I can think of .

Hello.
Connect to Microsoft Update using friends computer. This will then provide a
list of all the needed updates for this unit. Copy and paste or write the KB
#'s. Then use your fast connection to download using "Shenan Stanley's" site
links, excellent information. Thank You: Shenan Stanley.
Burn to CD. From this you can build a slipstream or simple transfer from cd
to your friends unit and install.
I do this and have had no problems.

Thank you all. This information is great. I have a new copy of Windows XP
Home, so must be SP2.

I guess I was looking for an FTP site of all the latest patches without
connecting to Microsoft and writing down all of the patches and downloading
each patch individually.

Another option is to move the computer to a different site that has cable,
might be a better option.

Thank you all. This information is great. I have a new copy of Windows
XP
Home, so must be SP2.

Not necessarily, actually- but IIRC all the XP install CDs I have seen have
the SP level marked on them on the label.

If your disk isn't SP2, it's a good idea to do a slipstreamed copy.
There's lots of directions available on the web (google "slipstream XP) and
while there are a few steps, they aren't that difficult. It does take a
bit of free drive space.

The key point is extracting the boot image from your present bootable CD,
and getting the right settings in your CD burning software. These settings
include emulation, load segment, and number of loaded sectors.

Not all burning software has all the controls needed to make a boot CD.
Nero does, but I'm not sure about others.

Once you've burned the CD, test that it is bootable. If it isn't, go back
and try again; you'll have just missed some small setting. This is a
valuable thing to know, and a valuable tool to have.

If you can do this, yes, it's often the fastest thing to do. Just make
sure that the PC in question *has* a network card - if it doesn't, these are
cheap now and trivial to install.
