I have XP installed with all service packs and autoupdates.
My Trend antivirus says I need to run security fix MS08 074 on my MS Excel
2003 SP3.
I grabbed the patch via MS tech note KB958436.
When I run the patch it says, after trying to run for a few seconds,
something like:
"KB958436 can't be applied"
How can I fix this problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.

MS08-074 has been superseded by MS09-009 -

You should inform them of this incorrect detection if KB95993 has been
installed, Mark. If it hasn't been installed, then the detection is still
outdated.

I do have Windows XP SP3 installed. That's what I meant by:

I downloaded the Office 2003 SP3 patch for MS09-009 per technote KB959995
and I have the same problem:
"The update cannot be applied" dialog box after running the updatd exe file.

To be clear here, you manually downloaded and tried to install KB959995,
by running office2003-KB959995-FullFile-ENU.exe, correct ?

Is the entire Office 2003 Suite installed or just Microsoft Office Excel
2003 ?
And you are sure Microsoft Office Excel 2003 has had SP3 applied to it ?

Open the installation log by going to Start > Run > type in

%temp%
Click OK or press Enter.
Open the OHotfix folder and then open the OHotfix(xxxxx).log.
The x's represent the number of the logs that have been created during
hotfix installation attempts. To find the one created for the attempted
installation of KB959995, hover the cursor over them and look for the
one created yesterday or click View > Arrange Icons by > Modified.

Check the 0Hotfix (xxxxx).log and post back with the entries from it
that are *right* below this entry, please:
Getting the patches...
Getting the products to patch..

In Program Files, open the Microsoft Office folder, then open the OFFICE
11 subfolder.
Right click XLVIEW.EXE, choose Properties.
Click the Version tab.
Please post the Version number of XLVIEW.EXE along with the " Getting
products to patch ... " section of the installation log.

Error 1635 ERROR_PATCH_PACKAGE_OPEN_FAILED
This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it ...

When KB959995 is installed, Excel.exe will be at V.11.0.8302.0

The Version of Excel you posted, 11.0.8169 does not appear to be the
correct one when SP3 is installed according to the list here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821549

After the installation of SP3 it should be at V. 11.0.8173.0.
So, it appears that SP3 did not install properly for Excel.

Suggest you compare the Versions shown in the KB against the Versions
now present on the system to see if SP3 installed properly.

OK, will do. Here's a bit more info:
To get the version info in my last post I went here: Right Click on
Excel.exe file,
Properties, Version, File Version = 11.0.8169
If I open Excel and go to Help/About is says: "...Excel 2003 (11.8169.8172)
SP3"

M

Mark D. Stotzer

I have the right version numbers of Excel.exe using all three methods noted
in the tech note you cited.
Method 1 in CPanel, Add Remove Programs = 11.0.8173.0
Method 2 the Excel Exe file = 11.0.8169
Methos 3 Help/about = 11.8169.8172
Sorry I muddied the water there for a bit.
All the Office apps seem to work fine-they just won't update.

Can't I just grab the EXE from somewhere and apply it?
All the links seem to point to MS Updte but it says my system and Office are
up to date.
Thanks!

You've attempted to manually install both updates and both failed. The
file Versions are correct for the installation of SP3 according to what
you've previously posted.
The only thing that is amiss is the application of the latest security
update for Excel, KB959995.
The error encountered
Error 1635 ERROR_PATCH_PACKAGE_OPEN_FAILED
This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can
access it
*may* stem from Trend.
So, suggest you completely disable *all* of Trend's processes and
services by temporarily disabling it, then download KB959995 from here
and *save* it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...63-c0cb-4c84-9b8a-6e52568045b0&displaylang=en

Attempt to install it. By temp disabling Trend you can rule out it's
interference in the downloading or application of KB959995.

Again, suggest you contact MS for *no-charge* support in getting
KB959995 installed if it fails to install -

Solved by manual removal of Office 2003, rerunning update twice.
Thanks for all the helpful replies.
