Latest Microsoft security updates caused network problems.

I have an HP zd7000A laptop running XP MCE with SP3. Last night the
automated update service downloaded what appeared to be the usual suspects:
some security patches and the latest malicious software removal tool. After
installing and re-booting, my network connectivity has gone to pot. I can
still ping external URLs so I know I have a good connection, but any attempt
to load a web page or download e-mail results in a time-out error. Likewise
when my AVG anti-virus tries to connect to the update server. This was all
working perfectly this morning, right up to the instant I re-booted after the
patch installs.

I'm stymied: the system can't download any possible updates or fixes
Microsoft might release for this, nor can I access any online tech support
for trying to troubleshoot the problem. I'm posting this from my office
system at work.

I guess one possibility would be to try to revert to the state prior to the
patches--I assume the state is bookmarked automatically by the Microsoft
Update feature? Does this seem reasonable? Has anyone else encountered this
problem?

Zone Alarm is the issue. Either uninstall the latest MS update, or lower
the ZA setting so it doesn't kill the internet.

Mark,
There does seem to be a problem here. Another poster and I had the same
problem after the install. You should be able to restore to a point before
the install to at least allow you internet connectivity again until the
problem can be figured out.

Lowering your security is a very dangerous way to react to the
problem.

The best choice is to dump ZA and use the Microsoft firewall instead.

I would never do that and it is IMO bad advice.
