Is There A MS Site For "All" The XP-2 Updates & Patches?

E

E. Barry Bruyea

Unfortunately, I'm in a Rural Area with no High Speed available at
this time. I'm planning on Installing a New, Faster Mainboard on my
computer along with doing a drive change, meaning I have to reinstall
XP and when I count up the number of upgrades & patches the amount of
time it is going to take with a dial up connection is ridiculous. I
have a friend with High Speed and would like to use his system to
download all the 'fixes' and load them on a CD or DVD and then install
them on my computer. I have been unable to find a site where the
specific ones for XP-2 (in order) are listed. Any help would be
appreciated.

First of all, upgrading the motherboard and adding a new hard drive does not
require a complete install, you could boot from the XP CD and do a repair
install. If the CD you have is not up-to-date with SP2 then that could be a
problem but a fix would be to slipstream the SP2 download with the XP CD and
burn a new XP w/SP2 CD and use it for a repair install. Google slipstream
for info on the procedure.

I believe downloading all the updates since SP2 came out is a possibility
but I am unaware of who/what/where has such a list.

But, they were asking about the Post SP2 updates.

| Order the SP2 CD from Microsoft. It's free.

You can have your friend make you a CD with most if not all of the updates.
Microsoft does not provide such a list that I am aware of.

One site has a decently updated list:
http://www.msfn.org/board/HOTFIXES_Win2000_SP4_WinXP_SP2_Win200_t86450.html
Scroll down tothe part labeled:
"MS WINDOWS XP PRO SP2 - (81)"

You can order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
http://snipurl.com/d41v

There are tools out there that can be used to get what you will need...
Example:
http://wud.jcarle.com/

Using that you can get all the updates you will likely need on your Windows
XP reinstall... Be sure you get the latest drivers for your hardware too
(belarc advisor, download it, run it, print out the results and give the
hardware section to your friend to make sure they get those for you too...)

Want to force your friend to do a bit more work?

Each month Microsoft releases that month's updates in ISO format - but they
*do not* go back as far as you might need.
January 2006-current
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086

That would be one CD per month since January 2006. Provide that many + a few
to your friend if you plan to do it that way - and one just for SP2...

A little more work?

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2006's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-may.mspx

January 2007's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-jan.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

Even more effort?

Here's a list through about April of this year - choose to go
to the IT Professional link if given the option.

because of the limitations
you obviously have, i wouldn't
discard the idea of using your
current harddrive.

you should add it to your
new motherboard as a master
or slave, then use your windows
cd to do a repair installation
to reconfigure the operating system
to your new motherboard.

to use your old harddrive
as the master on the new

There was a place and MS made them take it down a few weeks ago.

I was able to get the d/l and maybe you can find it somethere.

Assuming you installed XP and SP2, then did all the updates, there is a way.
All the updates are listed in add/remove programs if you allow it. With
each update noted is a MS KB number, and a weblink that will take you to a
download of each one. A few months ago, the number was 88 here. I
downloaded each one to another hard drive location. Took a long time as am
in the same predicament as you. Now, after each update has been installed,
I download that update as well. I've also kept track of the order of the
updates. Don't know what mischief will happen if out of order. That's why
I don't do what you're attempting.
