Dial-up fails to dial

I can go through the process of creating a new dial-up connection, and then
clicking on the "Dial" button. The result is the message "Opening Port" which
is quickly replaced with "Dialing nnnn". However it hangs there.

I can use Hyperterminal to send the ATDTnnnn command to the modem and that
dials and connects.

This is a friends machine, and I don't know what he may have messed up
trying to fix this.

Can anyone help?

Gary,

Describe what you mean by 'hangs'

Is the modem connected to COM3?

Can you hear the modem dialing?

Any error codes?

"Newbie Coder", a great big thanks for helping.

Hangs means that the when the dialog box displays "Dialing nnnn" it just
stays in that state, that is, nothing more happens. I can cancel without a
problem. The machine itself does not hang up. Sometimes, if I leave it long
enough, I get an error code but not aways the same. This machine is at a
friends in Atlanta GA. The friend is very much a newbie. I was trying to help
while I was there on a visit, but now I am back in
Raleigh, NC.

I don't know about the com port. However, when I use Hyperterminal and the
ATDTnnn command to dial, there is the dialing noise and the connecting noise,
and a request for user ID and password. This would suggest that the modem and
phone lines are working. I would assume that the com port is the same in both
cases.

When I use the dial-up connection (not Hyperterminal) there is no dialing
noise. When I started this problem, there was no noise at all. Later I was
getting a dial tone but no dialing noise. I'm not sure what changed.

Normally, I would suspect the modem driver, but I have tried an external USB
modem with the same results.

You would think that since this problem is easy to reproduce and fails every
time that it would be easy to solve. However, it has me stumped.

Your help is appreciated.
