Dial Up problem Unavailable Device COM1

I am installing a dial up modem in a friends Tiny Win XP Prof machine. Three
different modems install and all can be queried with success. They install to
COM port 3.
I then use connection wizard to create a dial up connection. Every time I do
this the dial up connection shows the modem as "Unavailable Device (COM1)"
Can any one help me please.
Kind Regards

I answered this question when you posted it before. Please do not
multipost; crosspost only judiciously if you must. Multiposting makes
more work for everyone. Here is a link explaining multiposting vs.

And to save everyone time in this one instance, here is the link I gave
you in my previous answer:

Thankyou for your suggestion. Tried method 1 with no success. On Method 2
what is an inplace upgrade of Windows XP? Do I need another version?
More on th eproblem:
After setting up a dial up connection I get an icon in the connections
window. There is a red cross on it and the words "Unavailable - device
missing"
If i select its properties it reads near the top of the properties box -
"Connect Using - Modem - Unavailable device (COM1)
Many thanks in advance

Is the modem properly installed? Did you install its drivers? Does it
show up in Device Manager? Does a query give an answer from the modem?
Test the modem with Hyperterminal - call a cell phone for instance.

Modems have their own UART chip or Serial port. The way Serial
or COM(munications) ports work with addressing and IRQs you
can have some problems getting a modem to work. Usually, a PC's
motherboard has one or two Serial or COM ports on it. Most times
they are configured as COM1 and COM2 using IRQ #'s 4 & 3. If
both an enabled it forces the modem to use a multiplexed COM
port, such as 3 or 4 which shares resources with 1 & 2. If your PC
doesn't require the Motherboard COM ports, then Disable them &
that will allow the modem to take the resources it wants.

Malke, The modem installed successfully using its driver from the supplied
disc on COM3. It works fine and responds as a Sucess to the modem querie.
Thanks R MCarty, Yes we have tried disabling COM1 and COM2 hoping that the
dial up connection would assign Com3 but no, it mad no difference. It is
right that COM1 and COM2 anable automatically on startup?
I have now also tried fitting a serial external modem on COM 1. This still
has the same result as described "unavailable device" etc.

What other devices do you have that would be taking the COM ports? On a
modern machine, they are usually not used for anything except a modem.
Go to Device Manager and tick Show Hidden Devices. Then
delete/uninstall absolutely everything that has to do with a modem
and/or serial device. I assume you're not using a serial mouse! I would
then shut down the machine and remove the external modem.

Now reboot and Windows should find your one internal modem and install
it. See if that helps.

Which PCI slot is the modem installed to ? Most motherboards use
IRQ sharing on various slots and only Slots #2 & #5 use independent
IRQ Mapping. I would go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall
the Modem software. Shut down the PC, move the modem to Slot #2
which should be the 2nd slot down from the AGP slot. Reboot the
PC and re-install the modem software.
Configuring modems is a "Throw-Back" to the early PC days. Many
times I'll just recommend that Dial-Up customers get a USB based
modem and do away with this "Square Peg in a Round Hole" routine.

No luck I'm affraid.
I could not find any hidden devices that were relevant to the modem or
serial port.
The modem was already installed in PCI slot 2. I have tried the others also.
Any more ideas? I really appreciate the time you guys are giving.
