unwanted automatic dial up

need some help with an autodialing problem. It is a new computer with
Norton Internet Security bundled on it. While loading my programs, I kept
closing the annoying splash screen which prompted me to activate the Norton
product. I finally did activate it, and from that point forward, the
computer would automatically try to dial up on boot up. I uninstalled NIS
both using the XP utility AND a file supplied by Norton. I have looked in
my startup folder and msconfig, and can find nothing untoward there. I
changed my IE settings to "never dial a connection" and that solved the
problem, but now I cannot open IE without first connecting up first.
Ironically I can open Outlook Express and it will dial the connection
automatically, but IE will not. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Richard Harison

Internet Options>Tools>Connections........dial when not present

Presumably you installed another AV / Firewall solution?

Thanks! I did try that before I posted --no change./ There is still that
mystery of why OE will dial up automatically when I open it, But IE doesn't
I always thought they used the same settings!

Thanks....I tried that...they found nothing untoward. A Dell senior
technician suggested dismounting the modem card, removing the driver,
unseating the CMOS battery and then re-installing the battery, modem card &
driver. I am a little leery of that.

Thanks for the courtesy top, PA Bear. I did not intend to multipost at all
but when answers did not come....
But I certainly will take your advice & the excellent link you gave me to
heart.
