Dial-up-Connection

I started to have this problem today and can't seem to solve it. Every time I
start my computer, the Dial-up-Connection launches (yes, I'm still using dial
up). If I disable it, multiple Dial-up-connection boxes appear. I thought
this was some kind of spyware at first. I downloaded the latest virus
definitions (Norton) ane tried the Microsoft Anti-Spyware software with no
luck. I have also gone through MSCONFIG and tried various combinations of
the Selective Startup with no luck. Is there a way to trace what is launching
this?

I also downloaded article 316530 but still no luck. I'm stumped

You may have set up some applications to check for updates, Check the Task scheduler, Firewalls,
Windows, Anti-Virus programs, WMP, etc.

Do you have Outlook Express startup Minimized? If you have it set to check for Email at regular
intervals and you're not on line, it will bring up the DUN. Tools > Options; and either uncheck
the option to "Check for new messages every xx minutes" or change the option under
"if my computer is not connected at the time..."

UNK,

Thanks for your suggestions...I tried them and still no success. I spent a
few hours with MSCONFIG with no luck. Is there a way to trace what is
happening on startup?

Go through these malware removal/checking steps systematically:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Once you know the system is 100% virus/malware-free, if the problem
still occurs do clean-boot troubleshooting:

Clean Boot - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=310353
and How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP -

Here are some sites where you can research the items you find in
Startup:

Here are the most common places Windows uses to load startup programs:

load= and run= in "Win.ini";

[386Enh] section of "System.ini";

C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp;

Registry Location keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run or RunServices.
and...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run or RunServices.

Yes, you can create a bootlog. Click Start -> Run -> msconfig
Click the "Boot.ini" tab and check the box, "/BOOTLOG", Apply, OK
After it reboots, the log is located at C:\Windows\Bootlog.txt
