E-mail notifacation Problems

At the log on page, under my icon it says I have an unread message at
hotmail, but I do not. I have Outlook & Outlook Express installed on my
computer, I am running XP> I would like to know why I am being told I have an
unread message when I don't and how to fix the problem. Thank you.
