DVI no longer default monitor signal ...

Monitor always used to switch to "DVI" after boot-up but, for several weeks
now, (even before recently repair installing XP Home ed.), from boot-up I
briefly see a "VGA" label top left, (from the monitor sensing a VGA signal).
Then after Windows gets almost fully up and running, I would get a brief,
(from the monitor), "DVI" label, obviously indicating that the monitor
eventually sensed a DVI signal and the thing has switched to DVI.

....so nowadays, after a while into a Windows session I notice the non "pin
sharp" characters on screen and have to press the + button on the
underside of the monitor, which I discovered toggles it into DVI, without
having to dig into the monitor menus.

....are ideas how to make this old Intel 865PE/D935/1gb pc3200 - and Nvidia
6200 AGP 8x (forceware 162.18 atm), go automatically to DVI like it used to
? I've waded through the, (nowadays hideous), Nvidia application software,
and can't see anything obvious. ...am not tempted to fiddle with monitor 1
of 2 and that stuff, ..."Active Desktop" rubbish is switched off and not in
use.

TIA

What is the make and model number of your monitor?

Tentatively explored the right-click menus on the Nvidia system tray icon,
and "Nvidia Display Settings" is set to [ Clone 19" (1 of 2) + 19" (2 of
2) ]
....I think along time ago I tried to set it to "Single Display" and ended up
....up the creek !

Your *monitor* should be sensing the signal coming into it. Unless you have
both a VGA cable and a DVI cable coming from your computer to the same
monitor - I am unsure what you think the problem is...

In other words - if you are connected with a DVI cable to your monitor - you
aren't getting a picture that is VGA through that cable, AFAIK.

...oooh ! ...just went into Device Manager | Monitors ...where's me *inf
gone ...if there ever was one ? !!
....there's two Default Monitors, and two Plug & Play monitors in there.
....it's a DGM L-1931 ..Digimate ?

thanks, ...I can have toggle to either, ...it always used to, towards end of
boot up, go to DVI.
....I suppose I could just try disconnecting VGA lead.
I suspect it's something to do with Nvidia 162.18 Forceware and the Clone /
1 of 2 / 2 of 2 / Single Monitors and that stuff.

Thanks all, ...found it !

Set Clone to [19" (2 of 2) + (1 of 2)]
instead of [19" (1 of 2) + (2 of 2)]
....and it goes to DVI after boot up.
I'm wondering how it changed itself !?
....guessing that 1 of 1 is RGB monitor input, and 2 of 2 is DVI monitor
input ?!

....sorry for posting what may appear a trivial problem but, ages ago I
changed something in Nvidia settings and ended up with desktop going to
monitor 2, and had to fiddle with plugs and adapters, to get picture back !

Same chipset. ATI card with dual outputs. Runs fine all day in analog.
Using DVI noticed some discrepancies. When I use restart from windows, lose
all video. Never happens from cold boot. If during the reboot, I change
cable use from DVI to analog, I see its using analog instead. When booting
cold, found the DVI does not display some of my boot video from my Promise
ide card or my scsi adapter. Using a 20.5" Optiquest (Viewsonic) Q20WB
monitor.

I personally am unable to determine any better picture from either analog or
DVI. Using 1280 by 980.

Good idea. Why have you got both leads connected in the first place?
I suspect it's something to do with Nvidia 162.18 Forceware and the Clone

Good question, .....they just sort of ended up that way i.e. both connected.
Anyhow, as I posted earlier, the answer was to do with the "nView Display
Settings" on the right-click Nvidia menu in system tray, which had changed
from (2 of 2) + (1 of 2) to (1 of 2) + (2 of 2), ...and I though that had
solved it, just prodded the + button on the underside of the monitor and
it switched to DVI ...i.e top left monitor "DVI" label briefly appeared,
....so It now looks like that wasn'r it !
....oh well, I may find the answer one day.

I have the graphics card resolution set to 1280 x 1024, which is the native
resolution of the monitor. In RGB mode (D-sub) picture is fine but there is
a very light blurring of characters. In DVI mode al edges are pin sharp.
Plus I like the theoretical side - i.e. the direct pixel addressing of DVI.
.....i.e in DVI mode only the pixels that need to change are changed !
