Multiple monitors

Here's how it started:
I have an ATI 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder that I was splitting the video signal
out to two monitors with a VGA/DVI splitting dongle. Worked perfectly.

Here's where I'm at:
I bought two new flat panels (got rid of a smaller one from the above setup)
and an aditional ATI 9250 PCI video card that supports both VGA and DVI
connections.

I connected the two new flat panels to the 9250 and my primary monitor to
the 9800. Went into the settings and set the layout. It all works great. I
now have a triple-head running from two video cards and extending my desktop
to each.

Here's the problem:
In the display settings I have monitors 1,2,3,4.

1. 9250 DVI connection
2. 9800 DVI connection (primary monitor)
3. 9800 secondary connection (unused)
4. 9250 VGA connection

When I open my applications they all want to open on the #1 labled monitor
which makes sense. But that is the monitor that sits off to my left.

How can I reorder my monitors in my display settings so that my primary
monitor is #1 so the applications open on the center monitor as they should
be?

It's always a task, but it starts out with putting the physical
monitors where they will ultimately be....

...then identify (right click on desktop, properties, settings, the
right click on the image of a monitor and identify each monitor)

....then juggle the wires on the back of the pc to map which input is
#1, #2, and #3..

this is the way I've had to do it more times than not... there's a way
in the software, but it's always been less time consuming to just
change the inputs (WHEN YOU CAN)... in your situation, not even going
back to read which is which in your setup.....

if this doesn't apply to you, I apologize for the inconvenience....

First - love your handle... :)

I guess that's what I was trying to avoid. I mean, if it has to be done then
why fight it.

I did go through the ATI control panel and tried to get it figured out that
way but it was less than productive. Found some cool stuff but not what I
needed.

I'll keep looking to see what i can find, if anything. If I find something
I'll let you know.

Thanks for the input!

Please do... as I've never had any retention on what actually
'worked'.. I'm usually using nVidia or ATI myself... but ATM, no
multiple monitors... and I've honestly never found the way to do it
via software...but I've only done 20-25 dual video setups and
installs, usually they're working out of the box.... 'usually'

My handle started out because I used to call anyone acting dumb, a
'dumbass' and then watched "That '70s show" and saw Red Forman say
Dumbass, it clicked... but then I got 2 4wheelers, both red, and yes,
one, was a Honda Foreman... RedForeman... it stuck, I"ve had it for
years....
