DVDs not recognized

I know I have played DVDs before, but now they are not recognized. I have two
drives. The top one says DVD. The bottom one says CD. When I place a DVD in
the top drive (I'm assuming that's the D drive) nothing happens. When I go to
Windows Media Player and click on Play, there's a tab that says DVD, VCD or
CD audio. When I click on that, there are two grey tabs going off to the
right. One says CD Drive (D) No Disc in Drive; and the one below it says CD
Drive (E) No Disc in Drive. Why does it say CD Drive when I have a DVD drive?
And why does it say No Disc in Drive when there is clearly a disc in the
drive? Please when answering this question realize I am a beginner in all
this. I appreciate your patience.

I had the same issue and the end result was to get a new dvd-player.

There are a million things I tried..some that I can think of off the top of
my head:

Run a anti-spyware and anti-virus program

If this is a blank dvd you are trying to record to try another dvd..if they
are from the same package and still don't work try from another package.

My suggestion..try to delete the dvd drive, reboot, and let the pc install
it. The drives may need to be updated.

Go into the device manager and make sure there isn't a yellow symbol with a
question mark on it..if so that means it is disabled..right-click and
enable. You can also update the drivers here as well.

Good luck..and post back maybe someone else can add t this thread.

Right-click on "My Computer", left click on "Properties" and then you will
see "device manager" on the "hardware" tab. You may have to click on the "+"
sign next to dvd/cd-rom drives.

Ok I figured out the problem. The DVD I was trying to view is something I
recorded off the TV on my DVD recorder and I had forgotten to finalize the
disk. Now what I want to do is make a copy of this DVD. Can I do this?
