"no disc in drive" when I try to play DVDs

Suddenly when I insert DVDs in my computer I can no longer play them.
The drive doesn't recognize that there is a disc in it. This started
happening after I tried to copy a disc which I'd made with a DVD
recorder and copying was stopped because of an error. WMP shows no
indication that there's a disc in the drive, Cybermedia Power DVD says
"No disc in drive1", and when I try to copy a disc the tray opens and
I'm told to insert a source disc.

Can anyone here suggest a cause and possibly a solution for this
problem? I've only had a PC for a few months and am still a beginner,
and I have no idea why this happened. Thanks in advance for any help.

Has the machine been rebooted since the failed copy?
Does the BIOS recognize the drive?
Try deleting the contents of:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name folder\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Windows\Prefetch
C:\Windows\Temp
Reboot.

If no joy boot to Safe Mode > Device Manager.
Remove any/all devices listed in DVD\CD ROM drives.
Close out of DM and open either MyComputer or Explorer.
Delete the contents of:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name folder\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Windows\Prefetch
C:\Windows\Temp
Reboot.

DVD drives are low-cost items meanwhile. There should be always spare
drives around in order to replace a possible defective drive, saving
valuable time.
