DVDRW/CDRW: Why so may hardware troubles in XP?

Why does it seem so many posting on how 'XP' is setting up a
CDRW/DVDRW drive in the hardware / 'My Computer' listing and
getting burning software to work with all media types in "XP"
when the same drives using older '98SE' worked just fine?

Is there something basically wrong in the hardware detection of
these devices in "XP"?

And your answer to the first question is what?

I have also noticed a lot of postings about CD-RW, and am having
problems myself.

For an upgrade, which is supposed to be performed by the average home
user, this one is a real pain.
