dvd/cdrw drive "disappeared"

i've got an hp pavilion dv4000 notebook that the dvd/cdrw drive went
"missing." it doesn't show in my computer or device manager (no
unknown hardware, either). the bios is no help, because it doesn't
show a list of devices detected at all. flashed the bios to latest
version, no help. tried booting to cd, but a message shows in the
bottom left corner very very briefly (can't even read what it says!),
and then it starts booting xp on the hdd.

i assumed the drive went out. so bought a new one and replaced it, but
it's still doing the exact same thing.

any suggestions?

I think Bob is correct. You likely have a data cable (IDE or SATA) that
is either (a) failed, or (b) not seated on the motherboard end. This
assumes, of course, that the DVD//CD-RW drive(s) receive power, which
you can test by ejecting the drive.

If you re-seat the cable, and it doesn't work, and then you replace the
cable, and it still doesn't work, then you might have a problem with
the motherboard itself.

Have you tried hitting pause/break on your lappy as the message appears?

yeah. doesn't work to try pausing it.

there is power going to the drive; i can pop out the tray.

i'm leaning towards the bad mobo, unfortunately.

thanks for the suggestions!

Know that that's really the case, then you have the option of simply
installing an additional IDE controller via the white PCI slots on the
motherboard, assuming there's room. That is often cheaper than
replacing a motherboard.
