Hello :
I am running XP home edition, the question is does XP have the means
to play a DVD movie or do I need to obtain special software. I have Sonic
MYDVD and Power DVD. I tried the Power DVD program, but it says this is to be
used with Memorex recorders. I currently have two LiteOn recorders.
Any help is welcomed. Thanks

Windows itself doesn't come with the MPEG-2 decoders needed to watch DVDs.

So yes you'll need a 3rd party application like Power DVD or WinDVD. Sounds
like your copy of Power DVD is an OEM version (that normally ships with DVD
drives) and is tied to that particular drive.

You'll need a codec to enable Media Player to play DVDs see Go to Start->Run
and type the following and press OK
DVDUPGRD /Detect

That should show you which codec if you have installed. PowerDVD will
certainly run DVDs. It sounds like you have an OEM version (the reference to
Memorex recorders suggest that) which may or may not install on your system.

..

Most codecs cost money. This one is very inexpensive

Thanks for the info. I just did not want to add more software unless I need
it.

Unfortunately your PowerDVD was bundled with that make of drive and has
been locked against any other. You will either need to buy a new copy,
or a codec for use with Windows Media player - see for example
