Can not create DVD Video Disk With DVD Burner

S

Stacy Young

Windows XP Media Center Edition
Dell Pentium 4 3.0 GHz
3.0 GB RAM
Plenty of Available Hard Drive Space
No video card

I have been trying to burn a video DVD unsuccesfully. I am not doing any
video editing just taking video files from my Canon video recorder and
simply trying to create a dvd video disk.

Each time I try to do this it seems to be running for quite a long time with
alot of hard drive activity. Probably runs for 1-2 hours showing progress
along the way but in the end I simply get a failure to write error with no
additional information.

I can create DVD's with just data files on it so it seems the burner is not
completely fried. It also burns CD's no problem. The DVD burner simply
refuses to create DVD video (maybe the processor is not enough??)

Originally thought the problem might be due to insuffient memory so I
recently upgraded from 1 to 3 GB but still getting the same error/problem.

I have tried 3 different burning programs all with the same result
(Imagemixer3 [came with Canon camcorder], Windows Movie Maker, Roxio MyDVD
LE).

Can anyone recommend where / what I might explore next to get this problem
resolved and/or be able to tell if I simply need a new DVD burner?

Thanks in advance your your help.

We saw your first 2 posts about this.

Tip...

OE Tools | Options | Read | Get XXX headers at a time

The default is 300. You may set this option as high as 1,000. Right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane | Synchronization Settings | select New
Messages Only. Now every time you open the newsgroup (or hit F5), you will
download the next-newest set of headers/messages..

When you feel you've downloaded enough headers/messages, again right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane and select Catch Up Now. This will Mark as
Read all messages on the server, including ones you've not yet downloaded.
Now return to "Get XXX headers at a time" and uncheck the option completely;
then compact the folder.

From now on, OE will only download headers/messages posted to the server
since you last checked (polled) for messages.

You should probably visit this page, too:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#cleannews (lotsa good stuff
there).

ok, sorry for the multiple posts. I saw that my system clock was off by a
few days and tried to repost with new corrected date and things got fouled
up.

A few other things concerning my problem. I was looking into it some more
and decided to try and run some checks / updates. Seems as though there are
some other strange behaviors with my computer.

I have AVG Free anti-virus. Trying to update to new 8.5 version as
recommended and the installation has failed at least 3 times

Have Ad-Aware Free and trying to update definitions and this gets hung up
and basically does nothing

Tried to run a system scan at PC PitStop and it will not complete and gets
hung up. Other than this the system seems to be operating ok with no
problems connecting to internet / email / spreadsheets etc. System seems to
run slow sometimes but not too bad

Not sure if this may help to identify any problems but wanted to pass along

Thanks again

What is the model number of your Canon?

How exactly are you importing the video from
the Canon to your hard drive? USB or Firewire?

And...what format is the video saved in?

Also what is the duration of the video?

The files were simply copied and pasted from an SD card. The video recorder
is Canon FS100

The format of the video files is .MOD (with an associated .MOI file). Both
files have been copied for each clip. Not sure what the MOI one is but it
is small I guess this is Canon's proprietary format(s) which the included
Imagemixer 3 SE software is intended to handle. I had been focusing on
trying to use that software (although I also tried the other 2 I mentioned)
since it was what came with the video recorder

I had been testing trying initially to burn a few short video clips (less
than 15 minutes total with probably 7-8 short clips) so length probably is
not an issue. I am pretty sure the software is pretty crappy and it only
accepts DVD -R (which I am using) but it should at least be able to do this
task (it is pretty basic isn't it?)

Thanks

Thanks fo the info.

No doubt...I suspect there are many ways to
accomplish the task you are faced with but I think
I would try the following.

First...rename the .mod files to .mpg. This should
also allow you to play the files with Windows Media
Player. (I don't think the .moi files are necessary)

Then download and install the following freeware
and follow the instructions I'm including.

DVD Flick
http://www.dvdflick.net/

Be sure to read the Guide:
http://www.dvdflick.net/guide.php

If you have problems downloading DVD Flick...
try the following direct link:
http://tinyurl.com/bvtfza
or...
http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/dvdflick/dvdflick_setup_1.3.0.6.exe

Save the file to a folder on your hard drive and
install from there.

Tutorials:

DVD Flick Tutorial
http://beginwithsoftware.com/videoguides/dvd-flick-guide.html

Burn Any PC Video Format into DVD
http://www.freevideoworkshop.com/dvdflicktutorial.htm

To create a basic Video DVD that should play in a free
standing DVD player...try the following...

Good luck.

First...read the DVD Flick Guide to familiarize yourself
with the program.

Open DVD Flick and insert a blank DVD in your burner.

If your computer's Autoplay window opens....just close it.

Click the Project Settings button and go to...Video /
Target format...residents of USA...choose...NTSC /
Accept.

Left click the Add title button and browse to your
Movie Clips and select the ones you want on the DVD.

You can arrange them by selecting one and then use
the Move Up and Move Down buttons.

Left click the Create DVD button / OK / Yes / Yes.

Wait while the DVD is created.

When the text "Finished Successfully" appears you
may close DVD Flick. Now you can eject your DVD
and play it in your DVD player.

At some point you may wish to purchase more
advanced software like Cyberlink, Nero, Roxio,
Ulead, etc...but at least this is a start.

Good luck.

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection (especially if you've been running AVG Free v7.5)!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

Thanks so much for your help. I will not be able to try all of this until
later but will let you know how it goes
