I recently "lost" my DVD and CD drives in XP, but was able to locate teh bad
connection and refind them, thank you Mr. Reed. Now unfortunately, XP keeps
telling me my DVD RW drive is a reguilar CD drive. Even if I uninstall the
drive and have XP "rediscover" it. It correctly recognizes the drive, but as
soon as I put a DVE -R inside it converts it to a CD drive.

I have unistalled NERO, and have seem some notes on this board about
it...could that be it...and does anyone have a recommendation to find my
lost drive?

Thanks (again)
Sam

Warning: Doing this may require you to reinstall any CD-Recording software
you have on your system.

Try removing the Upper and Lower CD-ROM filters. You can do this by editing
your registry. Find the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Disclaimer: "Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious,
system-wide problems that may require you to re-install Windows to correct
them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of
Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk."

You will see Upper Filters and/or Lower Filters. Delete any of them that
show up here. Reboot the machine and the drive should get detected
properly. Reinstall your CD burning software and hopefully the problem will
be resolved.

I would manually set a restore point using system restore before attempting
this.
