DVD-RW not "W-ing"

I'm sorta new to this usegroup thing so be gentle....My old motherboard
(nVidia nForce2 socket-A) recently died as did the processor (AMD
Athalon 2800+), so I had the motherboard replaced as well as the
processor (a new AMD sempron 2500+), since this my DVD-RW not longer
writes to DVDs, writes to CDs just fine. It will read them just not
write to them. Any suggestions. Thanks-pickluh

I have, first I tried the software that came w/ the drive (nero 6 oem
version) to no avail, then nero 6 ultimate edition, after uninstalling
the oem, also to no avail...nero will burn cds just fine (in the
dvd-rw), just not dvds.

that first, then gotta new 80GB HD, and did a clean install on it, (XP,
Nero, et al...), still to no avail....help argggghhhh, this is really
frustrating. I've tried different media brands, but whenever i start to
burn with nero, the progress immediately goes to 100% completion (with
no drive activity), and hangs up my system, (can't even shutdown nero
with task mngr.). like I said earlier, cds are fine.

If nero doesn't want to burn DVD's perhaps there is something physically
wrong with the unit?

I had the same problem on my sony dru-710a.
Ended up replacing the drive.

How would I check this Yves? I had the work done @ a shop, so as much
as I would like to assume they took care of this, we all know what
happens when we assume. Would this be the problem if the drive is
burning cds, but not dvds? thanks

Have you used the Nero Info tool to see what media your drive will burn too..?
What media DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R won't burn...?
Nero InCd, do you use it too..? Do you format the media first..?
Did you ever update the OEM software or the Nero retail version..? Even new
out of the box software should be updated, to fix bugs or other issues
arising after the product ships to the retailer..
Do you have other burning or DVD video apps loaded, DVDSanta seems to make
my system unstable, until it's removed.. Changing from one media type to
another frequently can cause OS or optical drive confusion, a reboot or log
off seems to solve it for me..If my drive Icon for my DVD drive changes to CD
drive after changing media, I log off, or do warm boot or a cold boot, if
necessary..

Most DVD drives have two lasers. One is used on CDs and the second is for
DVDs. If you tried a lens cleaner disk and it did not fix your problem, yes
the drive can be defective.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, everything (chipset, firmware,
driver, update wise) is current and optimal. I pulled the sony drive
and put it in another box, and it works fine. I was almost hoping it
wouldn't just so I could say the drive is F'ed and get a ew one, but I
intend to either overcome the issue, or @least figure out why it has
overcome me. Will keep trying just about anything. Once again, thanks
for the help guys. -Pickluh

recgonized as scsi drives (the new mobo has an sata-raid controller) i
