After recently reformatting my hard drive and replacing XP home with Xp Pro i got every hardware component and drivers operating normally agian with the exception of my DVD RW drive. It is now only recognised as a DVD RAM drive and can only do the job of a CD RW drive. I also cannot play back any dvds as Windows Media is now saying that their is a missing dvd decoder. I got round this slightly by downloading a trial of power dvd which enables me to watch dvds through power dvd but still same error with Windows Media Player

Try uninstalling your drive and allowing windows to reload the driver on
start up. Windows Media player does not have a dvd decoder loaded with it.
Normally if you load a program such as power dvd Windows Media will use the
same decoder.

Go to the DVD OEM website and download the latest drivers and look for fixes.

Try downloading a trial version of either Nero Burning ROM, NTI CD/dvd
maker, or Roxio.
If you google around a bit, you might also find freeware dvd players.
