DVD-RW drive cannot read blank disc

Hello, I am having this problem with my laptop's DVD-RW drive. My drive is
unable to detect blank cds or dvds. The problem occurs after i tried to burn
a dvdrw and the process failed. After which I tried to read blank disc and
the following error message was given:

E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function.

At first I that the drive was dirty thus borrowing a drive cleaner from my
friend to try it out. After the cleaning, the error message changed to the
following:

Please insert a disc into drive E:

The ironic part is that I am able to read disc that contains data, means
normal data disc that I burn as well as music disc. Nero is also able to
detect blank disc and thus allowing me to burn data into the blank disc in
the drive (although double clicking on E: in My Computer shows that there is
no disc).

I really hope some kind soul can help me out.

Thanks

Nero detects any disk. If it is blank, and has to be formatted for use, Nero
will do it on the fly. If the disk is not formatted, Windows Explorer will
not see it - in my experience.

How can i format a writeable disc?
Anyway, before that, my drive was able the detect blank disc even when I did
not format it. Therefore it's kind of weird.
Oh, thank you for the reply.

Hi there,
This error can occur if you are using CD-RW media that is not compatible
with your drive. The PX-W1610A and earlier supported CD-RW discs speeds of
2-4X (normal speed), and 4-10X for drives which carry the "High Speed CD-RW"
logo. The Plextor PX-W2410TA, and later, support 4-10X High-Speed media.

Some normal speed media that is claimed to be 4X is, in fact, 2X media. This
media will return the above error in Plextor PX-2410TA and later drives.
Vendor information, including minimum and maximum recording speeds, can be
located by reading the ATIP (Absolute Time in Pre-Groove) information,
present on every CD-R or CD-RW disc. This information can be read by
examining the properties of the drive using Plextor Manager 2000 or SimpliCD,
or by using a utility such as Nero Info Tool or CDR Identifier, both
available on the web.

Nero does not need to format the disk! You are confused with the other
program from Ahead -- InCD. This creates a "packet-write" version of the disk
which you can then use "copy/paste/erase" directly from.

Sorry. To me, Nero is everything that comes on the CD, including InCD. Why
one would NOT install this is beyond me, as it allows you to see the CD in
Windows Explorer - after you format the CD.

Hello,

Thanks all for the replies.

I used to be able to read all the blank disc (both cds and dvds) but the
problem surface after the incident whereby there was a corruption when i was
burning one of my dvdrw.

I still find it weird that i am able to read data disc, music disc as well
as burn cd and dvd but the drive just cannot read blank disc.

Sincerely,
Gabriel

One has the option of installing INCD with Nero Burning Rom program.

When "Nero" is mentioned in passing, one should question which Nero product
the individual is speaking of. There is more than the "Burning Rom"
product, and crippled versions as well. The version can be pertinent at
times as well, particularly when DVD is the subject at hand.

There's no such thing as reading blank media, only its detection. That is
your Nero product's job, whatever that product is and its version. Has
nothing to do with XP. In your shoes, would do a deinstall, reboot, and
install of that product.
Multiple software products that detect, burn, or determine CD/DVD properties
only compound the problem at hand.
