dvd-rom, cd-writer

Hi All:
I was working on 'hp pc recovery CD/DVD creater' for the
brand new computer. I put a blank CD-R on 'cd-writer'
and clicked to make 'pc recovery/CD Recovery Disks,' (8
in all for any disaster would happen in future) as
instructed. All went smoothly, but this, recovery CD
seemed to stuck when it came to the 'Verify CD creater,'
stating 'File verification in progress....,' and didn't
move any further, no blinkering light on CD-writer, nor
any sign in progress on pc recovery. Then, there is no
way for me to make 8 disks as seeing just very first one
got stuck in the progress.
My question is;
(1) Should I do this, 'pc recovery CD/DVD Creater' by
putting a blank CD-R into 'DVD-ROM?'
or,
(2) Is there any other way for me to perform this
job, 'pc recofery CD-DVD creater?'

BTW, for me 'DVD thing' is quite new, because I am pretty
accustomed to old way, just 'CD-writer.' Then, I would
be truly appreciate it if any explanation would provide
me with the difference/performance between dvd-rom and cd-
writer.
