CD NOT ABLE TO READ IN THE DVD AFTER REINSTALL

hi

i just got my sony notebook reinstall the xp fm the recovery cd, & found out
that the cd writer only able to read dvd but not vcd any more! or even play
vcd movie on it!
only dvd working

anyone met this problem before & anyone ca help me on this case?

Maybe you haven't got the right codecs to play VCD, try VLC Player, it
handles most video file types.

tks for the advise,
i wonder this is a vcd player, but my problem now is the dvd rom can't even
read the data cd! it show an empty disk!! but it is woth some date files like
jpg etc.

anyway will try to install it & see what happen

A DVD drive uses two different lasers, one for CD and one for DVD, if it's
reading DVD but not CD it may be that laser is faulty.
Before you condemn it try a laser lens cleaner disc.

hi again

installed the cd player below, it can run vcd now! tks
but i checked again more cd, only 2 out of 6 cd can be read! 1 is with jpg
photo & 1 is with mpeg files! other jpg or data file cd still not able to
read! some showed empty disk, some showed full but not able to be seen!

so it is not the lens problem!
my machine is sony vaio pcg-v505p with cd writer, hope you may help me to
figure out what went wrong
