I can't find a hardware NG so hope it's OK here. I want to replace a duff
DVD/CD writer in an old computer.

Will any DVD writer currently for sale work?

According to Belarc advisor, this is what is there at the moment.

No, you would need some DVD writing software at a minimum as Windows
doesn't do DVD writing. And yes there is a Windows XP hardware group.

You will also need specific software to burn DVD's as xp doesn't support DVD
burning natively

You are right - you shouldn't ask this here. There are plenty of pure
hardware groups where you SHOULD ask this.

Ask elsewhere

Yes. Depending on what you want to do tho, you may need some extra
software.
