DVD-ROM cannot read any dvd disk

After all win xp updates (including sp2 etc.) are installed, my win xp's
dvd-rom can only read cd disks, but no any dvd disks -- dvd data created on
another computer's dvd burner, or dvd movie (I have winDVD installed). A few
weeks ago, it was working, but now it can only read cd disks. When I open
Windows Explorer, it displays this drive as CD-ROM, not DVD-ROM any more. If
I insert a dvd disk to it, and try to access it from Windows Explorer, it
always displays a message: "Please insert a valid CD disk into the drive".
The device manager shows this hardware working properly.

Any idea and suggestion? Thanks!

The first thing I would do is go to the website of whatever DVD software
you are using and see if there is an update. If you have an OEM machine
like HP, go to their website for your specific machine. For instance,
the InterWin DVD software that comes with HP machines needed to have a
patch applied before installing XP SP2 in order to make it work.

If that doesn't work, you can try the drive in another machine and see
if it works there. You might also check into a drive-cleaner. Perhaps
the laser is dirty.
