DVD-RAM drive has disappeared

I've had a brand new Acer Aspire 5101 laptop for 3 weeks and suddenly the
DVD-RAM drive (Matshita UJ-850S) seems to have disappeared from my system.
It was working perfectly and now I can't use it at all. When I view My
Computer my 2 hard drive partitions are there (C: and D:) but the is no E:
drive. When I open Device Manager it says the device is not working, but I'm
sure it can't be a fault with the hardware as I've been extremely careful
with it, plus I've noticed on the internet that other people have had this
problem with this drive. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver
but that didn't work. I've looked for a newer version of the driver but
there isn't one. Even System Restore fails whatever restore point I choose
and I think it's because of the driver in question. Could there be something
wrong with my registry? Please help.

Thanks,
Darren

3 Wk old computer - Still under warranty - return to supplier and get them to
replace/repair.
If you attempt anything you will void your warranty.

Well, I followed the procedure by editing the registry and when I reset the
computer Windows didn't start but it went into System Repair. It couldn't
repair the problem automatically so I had to try System Restore again and
this time it worked! My DVD drive has now reappeared, so thanks for
suggesting that fix because although it didn't work for me it forced me to
try System Restore again.

I think what caused the problem was when I installed an application which
uses CD burning designed for Windows XP. It may have installed a CD burning
driver not compatible with Vista. I've learnt my lesson now.

Thanks again,
Darren

Anyway use the fix in the below KB for your Upper and Lower Filters which
are incorrect. Ignore the title of the KB and follow the fix.

Thanks very much Freddy. I'll check them out. I have actually got Nero 7
Premium, which I haven't installed yet, but I'm sincerely hoping it works.
I'll report back if it doesn't and try the 3 you mentioned.

darcal,

Both Nero and Roxio have caused problems in Vista for some people, because
of some Vista related incompatibility in those two burners. Most users have
no clue as to what those incompatibilities could be. Some have stated that
the latest updates resolve problems, but I have no way of knowing.
