cd/dvd not recognized

I have an Acer 5100. I have only used the dvd drive once and it worked fine.
When i tried to use it again it would not open any CD or DVD I tried. It has
Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-850S ATA device and the error message I got when I looked
it up in the device manager was:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39). I am running Windows VISTA. I have tried
updating the driver online and it gives me the messege: the best driver
software for your device is already installed.

Marcie,

Here is a Microsoft KB publication that includes the exact error message
that you're getting (Code 39, among others). See whether this one does the
trick:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314060

It was written for WinXP, but also applies to Vista. The problem existed
before Vista came to live with us.

Here is some background information on the issue, which likely provides more
information than you ever wanted to know, but it's interesting and know the
reason for what is causing the problem. Here is the background: Many
third-party programs that control CD or DVD burning (as well as some player
applications) install CD- or DVD-ROM filter device drivers into Windows.
These filter drivers are meant to allow for low-level hooks into the
hardware, to allow for functions such as packet writing (where a CD-R/W or
DVD-/+RW can be written incrementally, like a hard disk). These filter
drivers sometimes have problems that can cause the CD or DVD drive to stop
working correctly. The device entry for the CD or DVD drive in the Device
Manager may show up with an error descriptor that reads "The device could not
start." Additionally, there may be an error message that reads "One of the
filter drivers for this device is invalid." The devices themselves do not
show up in Explorer. Error codes for the device include code 31, code 32,
code 19 or code 39, and sometimes the even more ominous warning "Your
registry might be corrupted" appears. Fixing the problem simply involves
deleting the filter entries for the third-party device drivers.

Cal Bear ... thanks for the link ... I followed it and printed out the
registry editing instructions but the KB article does not indicate that it
applies to any version of Vista. Since this is a Vista newsgroup, I am
hoping that, even though the KB article does not specifically say it applies
to Vista, that it will. Is this so?

I uninstalled Roxio EMC9 several weeks ago but was still able to burn to CD
using the built-in CD burning software that comes with Vista. Then I noticed
that all the Burn links were gone and then I discovered a Code 31 and error
code 39 in Device Manager for my CD DVD drive and that D:/CD DVD was gone
from the list of devices in Computer. Don't know how or why it has gone
missing but hope to find how to get it back.

Thanks for your posts ... vanilla
