DVD drive disappeared!

I have a Packard Bell Easynote K5 285 with the standard DVD RW, I think its
Toshiba. I am running XP. The other day the drive just disappeared in 'My
Computer' and now I cannot see any dvd or cd that I put into the computer.
The drive does not even appear on the list of hardware devices...its as if
its vanished! I have tried all of the windows support suggestions and nothing
works, has anyone experienced this before?!

Cheers

Boy, have I! It turned out to be an incompatability problem between my
adaptec card update & Intel processor. Downloaded & installed the wrong
drivers then XP got unhappy in my efforts to find out what was going on.
Wound up purging my system of all CD & DVD programs r/w programs since I had
lost both drives. Major System failure. Do you know what it is like to
repair / reinstall XP Pro when you cannot use a CD? Did it though. Go back
and uninstall ALL CD & DVD software, etc., shut down for a while, boot up
and reinstall the programs from your original CD's. In case you are
wondering I did it using a memory stick that I loaded on my other computer.

Ypu!, and have the battle scars to prove it. The whole mess took about 8
hours to straighten out, and I have been advised to not burn cd's & dvd's
until Adeptec figures out a hotfix. I don't want to wind up in that mess
again. I can send stuff to the church & burn it there. That sounds a little
odd doesn't it
