Disappeared DVD Drive and Hard Drive

Running Win XP Home.
I had a second hard drive installed internally that was designated as E
drive and this suddenly "disappeared" from My Computer and Device Manager
Hardware. I assumed this hard drive crashed/malfunctioned. Now recently I
have also noticed that my CD/DVD drive that was D drive has also disappeared
in my Computer and Device Manager. I find this unusal now that both have
gone. I checked event log and it shows on Aug 23 that both the E and DVD
"disappeared from system" and there are numbers behind entry with ( ). I
know I lost the E drive prior to Aug 23. How can I tell what date it
actually happened, and then if I "restore" would this possibly get everything
back? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. My computer is not even 2
years old.

Are they shown in the system bios?
