dvd drive and dvd rw drive only work now and then

both my dvd drive and my dvd rw drive both only work now and then. both sound
as if they are starting up but then stop, then start and then stop again.
have ensured all the cables are connected correctly and securely. does anyone
know how to solve this?
 
not answering your question but share an experience with my old bad DVD

I had an DVD multi-writer from retail plus. it behaved like yours. Called
the vendor tech support, They told me it has trouble with the laser. after
couple of weeks, it literally died. Fortunately, it was on warranty and I
got it replaced.



Your problem may be the same, maybe it something else. Have you tried
reading a perfect good CD?
also could be caused by virus or improper driver.....
