DVD device driver missing or corrupt

I just upgraded windows media player and now XP refuses to acknowledge my DVD drives, saying that the device drivers are missing or corrupt. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drives and even went as far as to (try) to delete the drivers from the system32/drivers directory (they just re-appeared seconds later lol). What, if anything, can be done to fix this?
