I have two DVD drives that just stopped being recognized. it says "Windows
cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted
or missing. (Code 39)". It is using the provided windows driver. I've tried
updating the driver and reinstalling the drives.

Hi G-Nugget,

See if the information in this MSKB article helps you to resolve the problem:

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error code 31, code 32, code 19,
code 39, or code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=314060
(please note that although the article references Easy CD Creator, there are
other third-party software packages that will cause the same "problem" to
occur).

If you don't want to manually edit the registry, you can d/load and run the
registry patch that is available here:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
(look at the second "problem")

Regards,
