DVD decoder

So windows 2000 won't play DVD's without a decoder and I
obviously don't have a hardware decoder so where the heck
do I find a "third party software decoder" that it keeps
telling me I need?

I use PowerDVD a software program that came with both of my DVD drives.
My ATI video card also has a player program, but I like the features of PowerDVD
better. My video card also has a hardware decoder, but I like the effects of the
software encoder better and my CPU is fast enough to do this with minimal
disruptions.

Some retailers appear to sell PowerDVD online for a small charge, less than
$10. Try www.pricewatch.com If you cannot find it for a reasonable price
you can buy a new DVD-ROM drive for of order $40 including shipping that
includes the software from newegg.com (at least I did so once during the last
year).

There are some free porgrams too, but you might get what you asked for.
www.vcdhelp.com might be a place to look.

All of this may be moot unless citizens raise their voices against the
so-called DMCA, thanks to today's ruling by the Librarian of Congress, in
which it's stated - in the standard roundabout way - that playing DVDs and
CDs in your computer is a non-legal method of circumvention of copyrights.
