vista won't play DVD's

I get this message when I try to play a movie DVD: "Windows Media Player
cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection
between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated
driver for your video card." My driver is updated. I seem to remember I
was never able to play DVD's with XP until I downloaded some third party
software. Is it the same in Vista? Is there a good (free) decoder
available on the internet? Or do I have to buy one. TIA

if you have vista home premium or ultimate it comes with the decoder
preinstalled..

but see if www.gomplayer.com can play the .vob files that are in the dvd in
the ts_video folder

I'm running 64 bit Vista Ultimate with SP1. DVD's play fine in Media Player.
They also work ok with XP. The only thing I've noticed is that if Media
Center is running and I play a DVD with Media Player and end Media Player,
the picture from the DVD disappears but sound from the DVD continues to play
until I end Media Center. If Media Center is not running, the picture and
sound stop when I end Media Player.
