The CD/DVD RW drive is not recognising any discs at all ( even pre-recorded
ones ). It worked fine earlier. Any ideas ?

Go to Start > Run and type in: devmgmt.msc
and press the Enter key. After the Device Manager
window opens, scroll down to your DVD/CD-ROM
drives, click the "+" to expand, then right-click on
your CD/DVD Drive and select Uninstall. You will
be prompted to reboot your computer, so reboot
and Windows XP will reinstall the CD or DVD Drive.

Thank you - unfortunately it has made no difference. Do you think the drive
may need replacing ?

Have you tried reinstalling your DVD recording software application?

Can you see the drive in Explorer? If you can and it will read nothing
its probably faulty but swap it with another drive first to prove it.
Any old CD ROM will do just to prove the software side is OK.

I don't know if you are on a Laptop or a PC, if the former check your
DVDs wiring and Power, if on a Laptop sometimes the DVD player works
loose from its IDE connection, it appears to spin up and play but
nothing happens. You have take it out and re-connect it.
