DVD Burning Problem

Matt Newman

Hi All

I am having a problem with burning DVDs (converted AVI files to DVD
format) - using various software like ConvertXtoDVD, DVDShrink, Nero etc.

Approximately 30% through the burn process the burn fails with one of the
following errors -

"Write error at 3056(16) - Code 06 29 00 (Unit attention, Power On or Bus
Device reset occured)"

or

"Write error at 878016 (16) - COD3 052102 (Illegal request, invalid address
for write)"

I am using a new batch of DVD+Rs, (Manufacturer ID CMC MAG E01) but the
same brand as I have used many times before successfully (I have always used
DVD+Rs with no real problems!). Now I have had a few problems with my PC
over the past few weeks so went for a complete Windows install post format,
and reinstalled all the software. The PC is sweet as a nut, but the problem
above still occured. I tried a RiDisc DVD+RW and it worked fine with
ConvertXToDVD. The problem occurs with any avi file I convert!

I used the DVD+R in my laptop to burn the same files as I thought bad media
and it worked fine. According to Nero InfoTool my DVD Writer supports all
types of writeable DVD except DVDRAM.

The DVD files on the HDD post conversion play fine too.

So whats the problem - I do think its the discs but maybe I need to buy a
new writer!

The link is the DVDs I am having trouble with

Thoughts please!!

Many thanks in advance

See if there are any firmware updates for your writer. It could be the disk
maker has changed the dye subtly and now your writer doesn't like them. A
firmware update /may/ fix this.

Generic media using CMC Magnetics dye. Nothing wrong with CMC +R dye,
but the polycarbonate substrate or even the recording layer may be iffy.
Did you try burning at 6x speed ?

Buy a small quantity of either of these product:

http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk/shop/Verbatim-DVD-R-4.7GB-16x-Advanced-AZO-100-tub-p-n-43551-pr-19867.html

Burn at 8 or 12x maximum.

You might also upgrade the firmware as support for newer media should be
being updated frequently.

Burning was at 6X

My dvd writer is Philips DVDR1640P

Any more thoughts please?

Other than burning converted dvd movies have you been successful with
burning ordinary files to disc. Try burning a large folder to disc, for
instance using nero.

Also, what file sizes are these movies? I suspect quite large. Have you
tried converting smaller avi's - say less than 50mb - and seeing if they
burn?

Thanks all for the advice - I seem to have solved the problem - by upgrading
the firmware and burning at the lowest possible speed!

For info the AVIs I am converting and burning are either 700MB or 1.4 GB -
the last two with ConvertXToDVD have been successful so many thanks again!

Matt,

Glad to hear you found a solution to your problem. I was going to
suggest burning a a lower speed, sucks you have to use the absolutley
lowest speed but, hey its better than burning at 0Kb/s. I would like
to believe there's another and preferable solution to your current one
but I'm a ltittle confused about somehing...are you having trouble
with the conversion or with the actual burning of the DVD? I know you
kept mentioning burning...and I pretty sure that's where your problem
lies but somehow I got mixed up.
Anyhow, have you tried other burn speeds like 4x? Also have you tired
using different burning software? Nero is all I ever have used, until
recently I discovered MagicISO Maker which is quite impressive. The
burning software you use does make a difference, they are not all
created =. You mentioned you used Nero for "some" of the conversion?
What I would do is use Nero exculsively when possible, for the DVD
mastering and burning, this way you're consistent throughout the
project. Nero vision will take you from file selection through
conversion to DVDfs, and hold your hand through the burning process.
You can get a bus restart from a over used buffer or even a buffer
over flow.
Hope this helps...I know I'm late and you have a solution but I'd keep
looking around until you are back to what you had before or you break
it further. :)
Have fun,
jason
