dvd burner problem

I've recently installed a dvd burner, NEC-3550a. Operating system Win98SE.
After much experimenting I got it to work with fairly well with Easyburn
and dvd+rw disks. So I went on to try a dvd+r disk.

It seemed to write ok. But Windows doesn't see anything at all on it. The
drive spins and it looks like it's reading the directory ok but it always
comes up with 'no files found'.

Now the strange thing is when I reboot the same machine into linux (quite
old version, slack 9 I think, but with a newer kernel) it reads just fine
and verifies md5 check sums at about 14 Mbyte/sec. So It would appear
that there is nothing wrong with the disk. When I mount it under linux it
identifies it as iso9660 so I don't think this is a udf issue. The exact
same dvd contents burned to a dvd+rw disk works fine in windows.

The dvd+rw disk was Immation, atip manufacturer unknown. The dvd+r was
Memorex, atip CMC.

I've googled for several days and found nothing like this. I've tried
removing my old cd burning software from HP ( MyCD and Roxio). There are
no ghost drives in safe mode. I've tried installing Adaptec udf reading
support. Right now I'm out of ideas.

Any clues greatly appreciated,
kw

Check the following, just for the heckuvit:

ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspichk.exe

It's possible that you need a different ASPI driver. -Dave

Hi,
Just to confirm that you are not alone,I'm running Win98SE with your same
burner and Nero 6. (last version from Nove. '05) and I can burn files just
fine. However, when I go to read the finished disk there is nothing to be
seen. When I take the disk and put it into the second burner I have on the
system (It's a 3 year old Plextor CD-R/RW) I can see the files just fine. If
I restart the computer in XP I can read the files fine on both drives. So
I'm wondering the same thing as yourself.

If I remember correctly if you try to open a multi-session DVD in 98/95
it will not work. (Burn more data as time goes by) I think this maybe a
probles with windows95 not being able to correctly interpret all the
address on the disk.

But if you close the disk(DVD) in a one-time write it should read just
fine.

The offending dvd was not multisession.

To Mr Alter:
That's interesting. Fortunately I can burn and read regular cds just fine.
I am only having a problem with the dvd+r.

To Dave:
I tried the aspichk and it said the aspi layer was defective. I tried to
install the aspi layer from Adaptec using the 'force' switch. It totally
hosed the aspi so I couldn't even see the dvd burner.

I ended up using 'forceaspi18' to restore the aspi layer. Adaptec's
aspichk still complains that two components are out of date but at least
I can see the drive in EasyBurning again.

But no joy. I still can't see the files on the dvd+r!
