DVD burning problem

Virgil2U

I have a Samsung TS-H522U Writemaster 16X DVD burner and just got a new Gateway computer system that I had installed this into and set the drive on cable select on the same cable as the current DVD/CDRW drive that came with the system. The problem I have is that I can only burn DVD-R media at 4X and not at 12X as the drive is capable of, Should I set the drives up as master and slave so that I can then burn properly? The DVD-R media I have is 16X so it should be no problem to burn at 12X but am not allowed to by either DVD Decryptor or Nero.

could be the media you are using, I have some verbatium disks rated at 8x
but will only burn at 4x. I think it is also the burners problem. When I use
them in a different burner they write at 8x.

Ensure it's an 80 wire cable and not an older style 40 wire one. Also
ensure DMA is enabled.

If you use the Nero speed test, and try to read back the disks, what
speed do they read at ? Chances are, this is a problem with the writing
process, and not a cable datarate problem. I have plenty of problems
with media on my burner, and selecting the max burn rate, even with
rated media, gives me coasters. Quite a disappointment really.

If the disks will read back at full speed, then the data is travelling
over the cable at full speed.

You could try Samsung's Magic Speed program. Many Samsung DVD writers
natively run in 'silent' mode which may restrict your speeds. I am not
really sure if this applies to both read and write but might be something to
look into. I have a TSST corp DVD R/W that is a rebranded Samsung Light
Scribe drive that is very sensitive to the type of media I use. It is a 16x
burner but with some media will only burn at 4x or 8x even though the media
is 16x. TDK media seems to work best. I have no idea who makes the media for
TDK, but I would assume it isn't TDK.

Why would you assume that? TDK has been a major player in media production
for many years. But if you have a picky burner, I'd suggest you try maxell
brand media, also. -Dave

Probably because TDK actually makes little or none of their DVD media. The last
batches I bought were made by CMC Magnetics (CMC MAG M01) and were total crap.
I've been very disappointed with TDK recently, especially since they were my
brand of choice for VCR and cassette tape for years.

There are quite a few programs around for finding DVD +/-R manufacturer IDs. I
like CD-DVD Speed in the Nero Toolbox or available free from here:

I installed teh samsung magic speed program as you had described and
nero did recognize it as able to burn dvd-r at 12X and I burned a .img
file at 12X using the Memorex 16X dvd-r media but the quality was
terrible, in fact I had to throw it away. Is their a program out
there that can identify the manufacturer of blank dvd media?

I used the Nero program to identify the manufacturer of the dvd-r as
being Ritek but so far these have not been very good quality media. Is
Ritek a good brand or are they just junk?

You can find reviews for drives like that. They will use a variety of
media for testing.

Are you using an 80 wire IDE cable for that drive ?

For some brands of drives, it pays to update the firmware. But some
firmware updaters are dangerous (to other IDE devices), so you should
research any updater software before using it.

Some brands of optical drives, have recommended media on their web site.
Samsung has their recommendations on page 9 of this manual, but the
format of their recommendations is a joke. So you'll have to look
for more review web sites, for any good results they are getting.

I had tried several times to use the nero speed test and all it does
is cause the computer to freeze up. I was able to use the program to
identify the dvd-r's as being Ritek brand and not truly Memorex. Maybe
that is the reason the quality of them is so bad, I really don't know
anything about Ritek.

Any way I can find out it is a 80 wire cable? It is a new Gateway
system so I imagine it has a newer style cable.
