Duplicate name exists on the network

I'm getting an error message that states that there is a
duplicate name on the network, and my internet is acting
funny. I am on a college campus. I think it may be a
virus. Any thoughts?
 
You have not changed your machine name to a unique name. All machines on a
network must be unique. Right click on My Computer. Click on Computer Name
tab. Click Change on To rename this computer or join...... Make sure that
your Computer name is unique. When Win XP and other versions are installed,
normally the name is the same for all new installs (all Sony computers have
the same default name as do all Gateway or Dells).
