Dumprep.exe

Bill

I recently ran Spybot Search and Destroy. One of problems
it found was that the startup file for dumprep.exe does not
exist. Then I checked Msconfig which shows dumprep.exe as a
startup file. I never noticed this before?? I check
C:\windows\system32\ The file is there. I assume somehow
the file got corrupted. How can I fix it? PS I have run
trojan and Virus scans with no bad results. And I am not
familiar with any Virus that uses this file. Any suggestions?
Thanks and Best Regards,
Bill

Hi Bill,

This is loaded at startup if you had a crash and want to send a report to
Microsoft. It should be gone the next time you boot. It uses the "Runonce"
line in the registry.

More information here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_d.htm#xp_dumprep

From the above, I would check your runonce files in the registry to see what
is set there, actually, if nothing has recently been installed, remove them
all.

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

If in question, run the Startup Tracker from here and send me the log file
via email:

The dumprep is always in the msconfig even after a reboot.
It has been for a few weeks. I havent had the time to
research it. I will try what you have suggested. Are you
the Kelly from Kellys corner? Great website!!
Thanks,
Bill

Ok I checked the registry. I have nothing listed in the
runonce folder, but under HKLM\.....\run I have the
following key:
Kernel Fault Check Reg_expand
%systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
I will email you the log file in just a few.
Thanks,
Bill

Just to give an update for anyone who is interested or may
stumble across the same problem. I disabled error reporting
in the control panel and deleted the Kernel Fault Check key
under HKLM\....\Run. It is no longer showing up under
msconfig or the registry after reboot. However I still am
not sure why it was showing the dumprep file as missing. I
do have an idea though. I recently switched the error
reporting service in the services MMC from its default
(Automatic) to (Manual) because I did not want error
reporting in the first place. Maybe this caused the system
to not be able to open dumprep?? even thought the file is
in windows\system32. Does anyone have any thoughts about
this??
Thanks and Best Regards,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Check your Error Reporting Service. You want it set to Automatic.
I will email you the log file in just a few.

Ok, will check for it in a bit. Good luck in the meantime, Bill.
