dumprep - Spyware?

Guest

I have had four "serious" shutdowns in the past 24 hours. I have not
changed or added any programs. I found an entry in MSCONFIG for dumprep. Not
being familiar with it I searched the internet and found this entry at:
http://www.2-spyware.com/file-dumprep-exe.html

Described file dumprep.exe is not related to the security threats.
However the same or similar file name can be used by spyware or adware
programs to decept user. We advice you to scan your computer and eliminate
possible threats. download scanner and remover

Is this file really a threat? Or used maliciously?

Hi,

Info on dumprep:

This is loaded at startup if you had a crash and want to send a report to
Microsoft. It should be gone the next time you boot. It uses the "Runonce"
line in the registry.

More information here:

As for the rest of your post, did you mean 'serious errors'? If so:

Use one of these three options.

Right Click the My Computer Icon/Properties/Advanced/
Performance/Settings/Advanced/Change.

1. Set Page File to 0, ok your way out and reboot. Then follow the same
procedure and reset the Page File to System Managed File.

2. No Page File. Reboot. Then delete C:\Pagefile.Sys then revert the page
file setting.

3. Set the swap file size to zero, reboot. Re-set to System Managed,
reboot. Reset the Custom setting, reboot.

If this is not the case:

By default when WinXP encounters a system failure, it reboots without

Thanks for all the info! Additional Info - I had forgotten that I had enabled
the Manage Windows Startup in System Mechanic Pro version 5. I disabled it
and so far I have had no problems. I checked the events log and found that
DCOM sometimes fails to start and that a NEC PCI to USB Enhabced Host
Controller Service failed to start.... That is the most common entry along
with the drivers for my AverMedia PCI 300 tuner card. However, I have no
problems with USB or the tuner. Not sure what problems DCOM may show, but
have not found any programs that have not worked as designed. I have not had
that NEC USB card in the system for months. I am now using only onboard
Standard Enhanced USB with the XP drivers. The other USB drivers are VIA. How
do I get rid of that problem?

I did some research on the DCOM error in the log file. I found this KB file:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327153/EN-US/

I get to step 5 and there is no "look in" drop down exactly. When I rt click
on Users in the rt pane a box shows ASPNET, ktfod (unknown what that is), NT
AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users (S-1-5-11), NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE (S-1-5-4).

When I try step 6 there is nothing to select for either of the NT entries.

Step 7 is OK, but there is no entry for IIS Admin Service in Step 8

So, is there resolution for my DCOM error?

I am on a home network with a hardwire Broadband router. We have no problems

I examined the log file and noted that the DCOM error did not occur until I
updated to SP2. Does that help?
