Confusion with disabling dumprep.exe

Hello,

Just this morning I noticed "dumprep 0 -k" listed in my startup window
in msconfig. I have never seen that entry before, so I was a little
concerned. I did some reading and now understand the function of
dumprep.exe.

Someone else had used my computer before me, and I'm assuming that
they encountered a crash and chose "report this error to Microsoft",
which is something I have never done before, and which would explain
why I have never seen dumprep in my startup.

Anyways, the many sources I read for information stated that
dumprep.exe could be disabled by...

1) Selecting "Disable error reporting" in System Properties > Advanced
Error Reporting.

and / or

2) Selecting Write debugging information = "none" in System Properties
Advanced > Startup and Recovery.

After some experimentation, I noticed that both of the above solutions
had NO effect on whether or not "dumprep 0 -k" was enabled in my
startup. After trying each and both of the above settings, with
reboots after each change, dumprep continued to be eanbled in startup.
Eventually, I performed 1 and 2 above and ALSO unchecked dumprep from
the startup window. This seems to have disabled it.

Once I disabled it from startup, I then tried to re-enable it by doing
the opposite of solution 1 and 2. I couldn't. Again, they had NO
effect on dumprep being enabled in startup.

So, here are my questions...

By the way, I'm running Win XP Pro.

1) If solution 1 and 2 do not remove dumprep from startup, as
suggested by several sources, what DO they do?

2) Should 1 and 2 have disabled dumprep from startup? Is there
something wrong with my system?

Thanks for your help.

Nothing wrong with your system. The settings do not take place until after a
reboot. When you shutdown XP will set and save settings and then when you
reboot the new settings will take effect.

I rebooted after every change I made. The settings still have no
apparent effect.

dumprep 0 -k

KernalFaultCheck:
%systemroot%\\system32\\dumprep 0 -k

Dumprep.exe = Windows Error Reporting Dump Reporting Tool

You can disable this....
Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Under Startup and
Recovery | Settings button | Under System Failure | UNCheck: Write an
event to the system log | Under Write debugging information | Select (None)
| OK | Apply | OK

Write an event to the system log = dumprep 0-k

If you have other problems, then dumprep 0-k is automatically enabled.

If you have Error Reporting enabled, this entry may show up for the first
time after your PC has experienced a Windows XP "dump" crash, or an Office
XP or Internet Explorer 6 crash where you were prompted about sending the
crash results to Microsoft.

To disable Error Reporting....
Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab |
Error Reporting button | Disable error reporting

Also.
Start | Run | Type: sevices.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Error Reporting Service | Apply | OK

Thanks for the response, but I've already disabled it. I was hoping to
have the questions in my first post answered.

I guess I should clarify my original question.

How is it that...

1) disabling error reporting under system properties

and

2) setting "Write debugging information" to "none"

and

3) having the "Error Reporting Service" disabled via services.msc

....all failed to disable dumprep from my startup list?

The only thing that worked was unchecking it from msconfig.

Just wondering why none of the "solutions" worked.
